Walk on the other side of me?

He fell, his cheek on her stomach. They were both panting, taking their time to come back to themselves. Without really meaning to, she started running her fingers through his hair, her palms smoothing it down at each pass. She was enjoying the feel of him, the luxury of touching him, holding him, him being there on top of her. She could feel his breath, his heartbeat returning to normal; but tapping into her, its steady beat resonating through her body.

He began kissing her skin gently. Not trying to start anything again, just savoring her as she was savoring him.

“Baby?” she sighed.

“Yes?” He looked up, but didn’t stop tasting her.

“Are you too tired to go outside?”

He raised his head, he didn’t understand.

“Tonight’s our last night in freedom, out in the open. I’d like to take a little walk, out in the fresh air with you. Where it doesn’t matter if anyone sees us.”

He smiled, lifting his head a bit higher, his hands still on her hips.

“I would love to take a walk with you, Isa.”

Showered and changed, they left the hotel and began a leisurely walk down the street. The nightlife was warming up, and a number of cars passed thumping loud music. Karim reached for Isadora’s hand, and smiled at her. But he seemed a little ill at ease.

“I’m sorry, baby. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. You look uncomfortable.”

“No, I think it was a good idea. It’s just that…”

“What is it?”

“Would you mind walking on the other side of me? I’d feel more comfortable on the street side,” he said.

They changed positions and he took her left hand.

“Why did you want to change?” she wondered aloud.

“I can’t protect you from traffic if you’re closer to it than I am.”

“Protect me from traffic? Are you saying you can’t put your body between mine and an out of control vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“You’d do that?”

“Of course I would, Isa. Please don’t think it’s chauvinism or anything. It’s just the way I was raised.”

“Oh.”

“Have I upset you?” he asked.

“Not in the slightest. Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Protecting me.” She felt all shy and had to cuddle herself against him. He put his arm around her and they continued their walk.
